A dreadful warning

In John 7:14-24, Jesus was teaching publicly in the temple. His enemies were so offended with His words, that they sent temple guards to arrest Him.

It was then that the Savior gave them this dreadful warning: “I am only with you for a short time. ... You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” (vv. 33-34)

This did happen to them when Jerusalem was taken, and they vainly sought for the promised Messiah to deliver them, but never did find Him.

The impenitent unbeliever shall also experience this. Dying unrepentant, he will seek Christ but not find Him, and vainly desire to be where He is.

Such did happen to the rich man, when he looked up, in torment, and saw Lazarus a long way off, and was told that there was a great chasm fixed between them, which none could pass. (Luke 16:19-31)

How dreadful it will be for one to see Christ from a far distance, and to find the merciful Savior deaf to his beggings!

“When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me. For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the LORD.” (Proverbs 1:28-29)

The importance of investigating diligently

Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? These Jews, therefore, thought that Jesus could not be the Christ, thinking that He was born in Galilee (He was only brought up there) and they did not know that He was of David's family. But had they investigated diligently, they would have found that the reports about Him were false, and that He really had been born in Bethlehem, and was a descendant of David. They credulously believe the rumors they hear against Christ's ministers; they readily believe the objections that unbelievers make against the Bible; and they never inquire in...

Keep your treasure in Heaven.

Some people allow their thoughts and desires to be chained down to earth by business duties or the worldly worries of everyday life. They are absorbed in these as if there were nothing higher or better. The sweet duty of prayer is neglected. They do not meditate on the great truths of God's holy word. Even the Lord's day makes only little difference; there is no real seeking after God's kingdom and righteousness. But you must not give up on your brightest and highest privilege. Do not cast off the joys which might in all other respects mix with your most ordinary duties. “Don’t pile up treasures on earth, where moth and rust can spoil them and thieves can break in and steal. But keep your treasure in Heaven where there is neither moth nor rust to spoil it and nobody can break in and steal.
